If you have a straight run gable roof measure from shingle to shingle and then add 1 2 inch to each side for a slight overlap. Place other stakes spaced 8 feet apart in between. The downspout is the piece that is attached to the side of the home and channels runoff to the ground away from your home. Use a string and 1x2 stakes to lay out the trench.

Tie the string to the downspout then stretch it out and around all the stakes. Cut a two inch long notch in the front lip of the gutter with tin snips to join a rain gutter section with an inside or outside corner piece. Measure the total run of the gutter length you need. Connect the elbow to the gutter step 1 place a ladder against the house directly under the gutter where the downspout will be installed.

Over time that water would likely cause rotting issues for the porch framing and potentially turn into a leak problem in the basement over time. In other words downspouts are connected using a slip joint not a butt joint like the gutters so be sure to account for the overlapping slip joint when measuring usually 1 inch of downspout overlapping the elbow at each end. Cut a four inch long notch to overlap and splice together gutter sections. Prior to connecting these two drains the water from the right gutter drain would create a massive puddle on the ground. You ll need drop outlets to connect the gutters to the downspouts. Gutters over flows add downspout to bring water down from roof faster. Allow for about 1 1 2 inches of overlap at each connection.
