One strategy is to clean the marble with tsp and water then sand it with coarse sandpaper to etch it.
While this method will work fine for statues tile and marble countertops sanding large areas of marble like marble floors requires a completely different process and technique.
First wet sand the marble to wear away any scratches or etch marks then buff it to leave a smooth finish.
With a little elbow grease though you can able to buff out many scratches along with etch marks left by acidic substances.
If marble has uneven tiles deep cracks or holes or hairline fractures you should have a professional examine the marble.
For marble floors start with a dust mop.
Remember that your goal is to sand away the superficial glaze but let the tile retain the smoothness of its surface.

If you have polished marble apply a very thin coat of sealant.
