Remnants from the installation of the carpet make the job a little easier. Take the damaged piece that you cut out over to your donor carpet area. Sharp objects can fall cutting carpets but most often tears and rips occur along the seamed edges or at the edges of badly worn. Keep in mind that if you plan on replacing the carpet the patch will adhere to the padding making it harder to salvage the pad.

Reattach the carpet as you refasten the carpet to the tack strip you need to stretch it toward the wall. Start with a clean area. Fixing a ripped carpet while the tear is small can prevent accidents and keep the damage from spreading. Use a utility knife to trim off any pad covering the tack strip.

Lay the piece on top of the donor carpet. Similar to the previous step cut out the donor carpet making sure that you cut the backing without cutting tufts. If you re dealing with a corner or a small area you can use a knee kicker alone see photo 3. Loosen the carpet from its anchor whether a tack strip or metal cap.

Use the top piece as a template and draw around it with the awl or pen. Fixing a ripped or torn carpet is essential because loose carpet tears easily. A line or 2 of glue on the surface of the carpet pad will often be sufficient. When done correctly this repair eradicates the damaged area with minimal or no evidence.

If no remnants can be found cut a small portion of carpet from the back of a closet or other out of the way space to provide a repair piece.
